The Saran Lab investigates how individuals perceive, interpret, and navigate their environments across different states of consciousness. Our work focuses on the cognitive and neural processes that influence perception, belief formation, self-representation, memory integration, and decision-making.
By combining experimental neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, and computational methods, we examine how internal models shape human experience. Particular areas of interest include dreaming, immersive cognition, altered states of awareness, self-referential processing, and the mechanisms through which individuals generate meaning from their experiences.
Our long-term goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between cognition, consciousness, and human behavior, while contributing to broader discussions surrounding the nature of perception, identity, and subjective experience.
Current Focus
A major focus of our current work is understanding how individuals experience alternative models of self and reality. Through studies of imagination, immersive cognition, dreaming, identity transformation, and altered states of awareness, we examine the remarkable capacity of the human mind to generate internally coherent realities.
These investigations provide valuable insight into the mechanisms through which consciousness constructs experience, maintains identity, and navigates the boundary between perception and imagination.
